Hope in 5 (ish) – Ep. 30 { some thoughts on how to PROCESS the year, was NORMAL all that great? 😍 and AMAZING human stuff! }

how to be a better personDoes it feel like we just slid into the After Times this week, with nary a pause? I’m not sure what I thought was going to happen (maybe some sort of Day of Transition?), but we’re going back to ‘normal’. Which, tbh, looks just like the Before Times, except with masks on and like you caught businesses during a slow time of day.

I went to the library for the first time today and got a stack of books. We went to the movies last weekend (and were half of the allowed 8 people in the theater). We appear to be ‘back’, baby.

But if, like me, you were hoping for a bit more, well, processing of ALL THE THINGS we’ve learned (individually and collectively) in The Year That Shall Not Be Named, I’ve found a few links to help with that below.

Ready for a few ideas for you (and your life) (and the world) to be just a little bit better? Here are 5 quick links to bring you a little joy, a chance to think or to provide a helpful tool to you in 5 (ish) minutes! 🙂

Hope in 5 (ish) : your weekly newsletter to make being human a little easier

  • This was one of the first articles I came across when I was looking for something to mark the transition out of the past year. I’ve been thinking about how we all keep saying ‘back to normal’, but I feel that the year spent a lot of time showing us (again, individually and collectively) that maybe Normal wasn’t all that hot. Ya know?
  • Because we had this weird global pause, when we weren’t stressed and trying to just pivot and pivot and pivot again, there was a chance to consider what was working in our lives in the Before Times and perhaps how we wanted to change things. This article does a really nice job of helping how to THINK about our lives moving forward and how to figure out what we might want to adjust in terms of time and priorities.
  • And then there’s the grief and survivor’s guilt (if you didn’t lose your job or know anyone who died from Covid). Even if you had things better than a lot of people, every single human on this planet has experienced some kind of loss and grief this year, in big and small ways. That loss deserves some recognition, a chance to grieve, and some closure. You might be surprised at what you’ve lost this year. (Note: if you have kids, you know it’s been a tough year for them, too. Here are some films that might allow them to see loss in a slightly removed way that can help them process their own grief a bit.)
  • Sometimes it’s nice to remember that there are just some cool things in this world and that humans, by and large, are pretty amazing. 🙂 Check out the plan for the first ever ship tunnel that is being built in Norway! It’s so cool!! I hope they make it nice and wide….. #suezcanalprobs
  • Speaking of amazing human things, here is a list of the full Oscar nominations. Even if you’re not into the Oscars or movies (GASP!), it’s kinda cool to at least know what some of the categories and nominations are. 🙂

Hopefully,

Melissa 🙂
